Minister of Economic Affairs Reinhard Meyer visits Parchim

RoweMed sees growth potential in specialty products used, for example, in the treatment of malignant tumors. A novel filter system is being developed in a joint research project. What this means for patients.

Business and science in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are working hand in hand to ensure that cancer patients, for example, can receive even more personalized treatment in the future. The ten-year collaboration between medical technology manufacturer RoweMed AG – Medical 4 Life in Parchim and the Institute for Implant Technology and Biomaterials (IIB) in Warnemünde has now culminated in a joint research project. It has been given the working title “MediFlow.”

RoweMed and IIB develop innovative filter system

The aim is to launch an innovative modular filtration and reservoir system to increase patient and process safety in highly personalized cell and gene therapy. RoweMed and the IIB are jointly developing the prototype of a novel filter system. It will be manufactured in Parchim in the future.

One of its special features is its ability to handle small quantities of therapeutic fluids, enabling cost-effective implementation of therapies tailored to individual patients. Among other things, a novel membrane filter is being developed for the system that will be significantly more powerful than those currently on the market, explains Dr. Dirk Forberger. He heads the company together with his fellow board member Frank Dietrich. Along with other components, the filter will be an important part of a complex tube set that enables the safe processing of fluids in the complex manufacturing process of the new drug.

Parchim-based company joins the Champions League of medical technology manufacturers

With innovations such as these, the company, which has been based in Parchim since 2004 and will expand with a fourth clean room in 2022, aims to establish itself in the international Champions League of medical technology manufacturers. “We are proud of what we have and are happy to show it,” said Dirk Forberger during a visit by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Minister of Economic Affairs Reinhard Meyer (SPD) to the district town of Ludwigslust-Parchim.

With its current workforce of 170 employees, the company specializes in the development, production, and marketing of customized single-use medical products. From sampling spikes to tube sets, more than 300 items with their own approval are produced under clean room conditions for the international market. Some are assembled entirely by hand, while others are partially or fully automated. Production volumes vary from up to three million per year to small series with a run of 200 units.

Minister of Economic Affairs Meyer praises flagship project during visit to Parchim

The medical technology manufacturer sees its growth potential primarily in the area of specialty products. There are always new therapies, procedures, and new devices that need to be equipped with components and systems. RoweMed has set itself the challenge of responding flexibly to this and translating customer requirements into products in a highly dynamic environment.

For Minister of Economic Affairs Meyer, the joint research project is a “showcase project.” It is a good example of practical cooperation between industry and science. Referring to RoweMed, Meyer said, “Thanks to continuous investment in the location and, above all, in research and development, innovative and marketable products from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are finding their way out into the world.”

State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania supports innovative project with European funding

The Ministry of Economic Affairs is supporting the project partners with funds from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). During his visit to Parchim, Reinhard Meyer presented the grant notification for almost €1.6 million. The Institute for Implant Technology and Biomaterials will receive €1.9 million in funding. The total investment volume for the project is estimated at €4.8 million.
